A member of the Class of 1976, who wishes to remain anonymous, well understands the benefits—both to Furman and to his estate—of making the University the beneficiary of his Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs). Through his generosity, he will provide scholarship assistance for students who demonstrate academic excellence in sciences while avoiding passing along a tax burden to his heirs.

This donor wanted to make a planned gift to Furman as a way of saying thanks. “I want to give something back. I would never have been able to attend Furman if I had not received scholarships and other financial aid.” He adds, “The gift of my IRAs makes the most sense from both a charitable point of view and a financial point of view because it provides me with the ability to eventually make a much larger gift than I can at the present. It gives me great peace of mind to know that whatever happens to me, the money will be there to fulfill my goal of establishing a scholarship at Furman. It is well worth your while to discuss this type of gift with your financial and tax professionals.”
